1000 acre land purchased for rare birds sanctuary in Kilifi

A non-governmental organisation has bought 1,000 acres at the expansive Dakatcha woodland in Magarini, to create a sanctuary for endangered wildlife.

Nature Kenya officials said the land would be converted to a nature reserve for the Clarke’s weaver bird, a rare species only found in the county, and other rare coastal wildlife.

Clarke’s weaver is considered endangered in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list.

Nature Kenya Executive Director Paul Matiku said the reserve would protect water sources and fragile soil in the woodland, which are on the verge of extinction due to human activities.
