Lands Cabinet Secretary Farida Karoney has assured Kenyans that the ongoing digitization of records at the Ministry of Lands will ease property registration process.
Karoney addressing a stakeholder’s forum at a Nairobi Hotel yesterday said all security measures of ensuring safety of the documents will be put in place and members of the public should trust the system.
She noted that the Ministry of Lands started testing a process of making it easier to register land property in Nairobi County from 73 days to 12 days and the system has proved it is possible.
The Lands CS said the process of digitizing records is fast gaining success after bringing on board a joint mapping team that comprises of Multi-Agency state departments, which will make it possible for Kenyans to realize transformation in property registration process.
Karoney said the Ease of Doing Business in Kenya averaged 101 from 2008 until 2018, where Kenya was ranked 61 last year according to the World Bank annual ratings. “Kenya can do better than the best Countries like New Zealand globally as we target 24 hours in property registration process,” she noted.
The CS maintained that the Ministry’s plans to close the Central Land Registry within the current financial year is still on course and beginning July 2019 all land transactions will be carried out within their respective Counties and Sub Counties.
Similarly, the PS for Lands Dr. Nicholas Muraguri speaking during the same event noted that the digital process will provide a clean environment in land transaction as the cumbersome steps will now be carried out online.
The PS said the system will promote transparency and it is geared in restoring sanity in land transactions and property ownership across the country.
